An important element any photographer, whether you are a hobbyist or a professional, should understand is aperture. Aperture is the physical opening within your lens that allows light through to the sensor. Many beginning photographers often ask how we professionals blur our backgrounds; well the answer is simple and often times something they don’t understand. Simply put, we use a wide aperture. Many people find this confusing as I myself did when I first began years ago. I was so confused, I couldn’t understand why I would use a small number when shooting wide. The photography language just wasn’t clicking with me until finally I began thinking of aperture like our eyes.
